In the early 1860s the British wallpaper market was booming, with mass-produced papers offering homeowners a cheaper alternative to textile-based wall decoration. Conscious of wallpaper's accelerating popularity, William Morris made it one of the first things his new interior decorations company put into serial production.With a natural eye for pattern, Morris – a British poet, artist, writer, textile-wallpaper designer and a socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement - produced papers that not only balanced figuration and order, but which were distinctive. He produced his famous wallpapers within the firm ‘Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co.’, and later for ‘Morris & Co.’Morris personally created sixty-five different block-printed wallpapers (also for ceilings), all with intricate, stylized patterns based on nature, particularly upon the native flowers and plants of Britain. His wallpapers and textile designs had a major effect on British interior designs, and then upon the subsequent Art Nouveau movement in Europe and the United States.This Complete Collection from 1862 to 1917 includes all the wallpapers designed by William Morris during his lifetime and also produced after his death in 1896.
